Gun Owner Identity Theft Coverage: What Is it?

Gun Owner Identity Theft Coverage: What Is it?

July 30th, 2024

Protecting your identity is vital not only in your daily life, but as a gun owner. And while it might be easy to assume you’ll never be the victim of firearm or identity theft; the reality is that it can happen to anyone. The good news is that you can feel confident in knowing you have protection to help you through these unpredictable events with U.S. LawShield® Gun Owner Identity (GOID) Theft Coverage

What is U.S. LawShield Gun Owner Identity Theft Coverage?

GOID Coverage provides protection in cases of stolen firearms and compromised IDs. This coverage is included in the Explore, Navigate, and Defend Plans. It also works in conjunction with Multi-State Coverage (For example, if you have these coverages and you’re a resident of Texas whose firearm is stolen during a trip to Florida, you’re covered). Please note, Multi-State Coverage is only part of the Explore and Navigate Plans.

With GOID, you get peace of mind knowing that if you’re ever the target of identity or firearm theft, you have access to immediate assistance from an experienced Independent Program Attorney. Whatever happens, you won’t be alone!

What are the benefits of GOID?

As a U.S. LawShield member with GOID, you receive numerous benefits. In the event your firearm is stolen, you can get help notifying the correct federal agencies. You can also also get assistance navigating the process of placing your stolen gun report in the right databases, including any database maintained by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) or state database. Furthermore, if there’s a police investigation related to the stolen firearm, you have access to legal representation.

Other GOID member benefits include:

  • Access to an experienced Independent Program Attorney (IPA) to guide you through the process of reporting your stolen gun or identity incident. This includes assistance in filing the correct paperwork.
  • Identity theft coverage for forms of identification such as a government-issued concealed carry permit, driver’s license, or other identification.
  • Consultation, advice, and legal representation from an IPA in the event of criminal or civil actions directly related to a lost or stolen firearm.
  • Help recovering a legally owned firearm that was wrongfully confiscated due to a case of mistaken identity.
  • Assistance from an IPA if the right to lawfully purchase a firearm has been wrongfully denied.
  • Help investigating or clarifying any misidentification if issuance of a firearm carry license/permit is denied or a license/permit is revoked or suspended.

How can an IPA help through GOID?

Having immediate access to an IPA is a key benefit of GOID Coverage. In cases of firearm or identity theft, an IPA can offer assistance in many ways, such as:

  • Legal representation if your gun is stolen and subsequently used in a crime.
  • Legal representation if your gun was previously used in a crime.
  • Assistance filing the proper police reports related to your stolen firearm or ID.
  • Assistance with the preparation and submission of a “Not Me Letter” in applicable states, stating that you’re not the subject of a criminal record.
  • Assistance obtaining a Unique Personal Identification Number (UPIN) from the FBI or other agencies to help you buy firearms in the future without confusion.

Should you get GOID Coverage?

The peace of mind and overall benefits of having U.S. LawShield GOID Coverage are significant. It can be quite a hassle dealing with a stolen firearm or identity theft, and when you have GOID Coverage, you won’t be navigating the legalities of the situation alone. With an IPA by your side, you can move forward with confidence knowing you’re protected every step of the way.
